Surrey County Council have reduced the budget for maintenance of public rights of way by 60% this year, and a contractor has been told that SCC are cancelling all summer maintenance contracts.
Whilst Ramblers volunteers can and do help to maintain many paths, there are some tasks that require the use of heavy machinery and contractors; for example bridge repair and the clearance of large fallen trees.
With no contract maintenance work taking place, there is a real risk that some of our favourite footpaths may have to be closed. As Surrey council elections are taking place shortly, now is the time to contact your candidate and urge them to ensure that the Countryside Service is properly funded in 2017 and beyond.
